ICC Inspector and Plans Examiner Certifications

The Five Steps to Becoming ICC Certified:

STEP 1 - Select a certification category and determine which tests you will need to take (see ICC Exam Candidate Bulletin link below). Make sure your compare the category with your experience so the State of Florida will approve your application (i.e. if your only have experience doing plumbing, you will not qualify for a license in mechanical).

STEP 2 - Obtain the study references required for your exam (www.contractorslibrary.com or call 1-800-571-4777).

STEP 3 - Determine whether you want to take the exam electronically via computer or by written paper-and-pencil. Computer based tests may be taken at Pearson-Vue centers around the country; written exams are given once every quarter.

STEP 4 - Enroll in Exam Prep Course Review our schedule of exam prep classes - scheduled prior to the written exams each quarter, these classes review the content outline for the exams for commercial and residential inspectors and plans examiner (see class schedule).

STEP 5 - Pass your ICC Certification Exam!.

There are two paths to International Code Council (ICC) certification & State of Florida Licensure:

1) The ICC certification exams are open to anyone and those that pass will earn a voluntary certification for industry professionals. Applications for the test are sent directly to ICC and are normally open book proctored exams administered in ICC testing centers throughout the nation. If an ICC certified professional has already passed these exams and wants to work in Florida, the ICC certification would be submitted with their application packet to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation. The ICC certified professional will also need to meet the Florida DBPR's experience requirements (see Florida DBPR application link below).

2) To become a Florida "Standard" Inspector or Plans Examiner, APPLY TO THE STATE OF FLORIDA either before you take the the ICC certification exam or after you take the exam to include copies of your ICC certificate. The state reviews your application, which has experience and/or education requirements in the category you are seeking certification for, to determine if you 'qualify' for the "Standard" Certificate. Florida will also require you to take the Florida Principles & Practices Exam.
